Our Story

Two women who met as teenagers, were reunited many years later in a joint attempt to beat the yeast beast. After a few weeks of plotting and scheming together, they decided to meet and bake. We are Jini and D and that is our story!

For five years now, we (Sarojini and Dwithiya) have shared many edible adventures; from making sourdough, to our little illustrated blog, to workshops and even writing a newspaper column highlighting the diverse food cultures in Hyderabad! Over the last two years, as the pandemic forced us to turn the volume dial down, we began to hear the rhythms of nature more clearly.

With the supply chain being impacted deeply, we relied more on produce that was local and seasonal and most importantly in our own small ways, we started using our ingredients with intention. It is with this consciousness that we took the turn into the world of friendly microbes and we are now happy residents of this community. We reclaimed our relationships with the natural world and saw ourselves in a new light; as part of a vibrant community that is symbiotic, a community that supports mutual growth and thrives in diversity!

We are now collaborating with our new invisible friends to interact with fruits and vegetables in a way that is rooted in who we are and where we come from. We are watching their rhythms as they rise and fall, we are listening intently as they bubble and dance, we are breathing in their spunky scents and tasting the complex, edgy flavours of fermentation.

As we become aware of how much joy and satisfaction we can derive from working with nature, we are also eager to share; we want people to experience familiar ingredients in an unfamiliar way, we want more people to be as fascinated by the world of microbes as we are and revel in its joys, like popping open a fizzy drink that has been carbonated naturally or inhaling the aroma of a freshly baked sourdough bread!

Our main intention with Opika is to grow the tribe of fermenters, to learn and explore the various ways in which humans have been fermenting for centuries and to be intentional about our ingredients and our food. We hope to get here through creating fermented products, through curated dinners that highlight ferments, through workshops, through shared book readings and conversations that take us down wonderful rabbit holes.

Our promise is a commitment to intention, to care for our environment, to be thoughtful in everything we do and to in our own imperfect way continuously strive to live in harmony with nature.

So, pull a chair at our table and join us for scrumptious food and engaging conversations!
